Cambodia to Build Three More Deep-Sea Ports to Boost Trade with US & Europe

Cambodia is planning to build three more deep-sea ports in the Kingdom, aiming to boost direct freight access to and from the US and European nations.

The plan was confirmed by HE Minister Sun Chanthol in a press conference on 27 October 2022.

“The first port is the expansion of Sihanoukville port to 14.5m by 2026. We are also studying to build two more ports, one 16.50m and the other 17.50m. By 2030, the 17.50m port will allow ships to carry up to 120,000 tons of cargo from Cambodia directly to the United States and straight to Europe,” said HE Sun Chanthol.

“Now, due to the shallow water, Cambodia has to transport goods to Singapore or to Hong Kong or to Wong Tao to transfer goods to the big ship, which is not cost-effective,” he added.

According to HE Sun Chanthol, these additional port projects will be built under Japanese loans.
