The 400 MW power plant running on diesel to generate electricity will be built in Kandal province’s Lvea Aem district, bringing hope to the nation with current energy crisis in Phnom Penh city.

The government is ordering its purchases the diesel-running generators from Finland and Germany to install in Kandal province with total investment of US$355 million, H.E. Ty Norin, secretary of state at Ministry of Mine and Energy said.

The agreement on the 400 MW generators will be signed on June 11, he said.

“Before we wanted to bring floating power generator from Turkey, but now we want generators to be installed in mainland and with similar expenditure amount, generators from Finland and Germany are efficiency for long time,” H.E. Ty Norin said.

The plant will be completed 10 months after agreement signed, he said, added that the generators will be built at the same location, but two different building.

China National Heavy Machinery Corporation (CHMC) is contracted constructor of the power plant.

Speaking to graduation ceremony on Monday, Samdech Techo Hun Sen Prime Minister said for next year in Phnom Penh, there is a need to have generators with 400 MW, of which 200 MW generator is purchased from Finland and 200 MW generator from Germany.

Last year, Cambodia consumed 2,650 MW, a 15% increase compared to a year earlier. 442 MW were imported from Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos in 2018, according to the Ministry of Mine and Energy.
