Tourism Seaport in Kep Province Planned

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) has been discussing the construction of a seaport in Kep province to serve the transportation of tourists. The project is now in the process of seeking funding for implementation.

H.E Vasim Sorya, spokesman for Ministry of Public Works and Transport, said the Kep tourism seaport project is a state-funded project, and so far, the Ministry of Economy and Finance has discussed the over allocating budget to implement the project.

He said the project to build a tourist seaport in Kep province is to respond to the increasing number of international and local tourists in the province, while in Kampot province, another coastal province, has a tourism seaport that is currently under construction and Sihanoukville province has a deep seaport.

“Because Kampot province has a tourism seaport, the ministry proposes plans to build a tourism seaport in Kep to serve the tourist industry,” he said.

He added that the Kep tourism seaport will be smaller than the tourism seaport in Kampot province, and that the cost will be less than the amount used to build a tourism seaport in Kampot province.

Kampot province will have a tourism seaport as a gateway for national and international tourists and it will connect to seaports in Vietnam and Thailand for transporting tourists. The construction of the port in Kampot is using an US$18 million loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

As planned, the port of Kampot is scheduled to be completed and put into service by the end of 2019.
