Renewable solar and wind energy will be the future for energy consumption

Renewable solar and wind energy are being discussed during the 5th edition of the landmark Green Business Forum 2019 which is hosted by EuroCham. Since some solar energy projects have been approved to be initiated in Cambodia, the grid management and technical implications will be discussed and demonstrated at the forum.

The panelist for the discussion, Mr. Morten Kvammen, who is also a principal partner at Lotus Cambodia and Finance Advisor at 3iCambodia, has pointed out that there are nine locations where solar energy projects have been approved, in Bavet, Kampong Speu, Kampong Chhnang, Svay Rieng, Battambang, Pursat and Banteay Meanchey province.

According to a newly launched publication, De-Risking Renewable Energy Investment in Cambodia (DREI) from the National Council for Sustainable Development (NCSD), Cambodia’s on-grid power sector is characterised by rising electricity demand, with annual demand projected to increase by 15-20% up to 2020 and beyond.

A report from the World Bank in 2018 showed that the energy consumption in Cambodia for households in urban area is 128 kWh/ month and in rural areas is 38 kWh/month as the average electricity use per capita is 55 kWh/month.

Cambodia is among the highest consumers of electricity in Southeast Asia according to the DREI report and Cambodia also imports 22% of its overall energy from neighbouring countries, particularly during the dry season from December to April based on data from Electricite Du Cambodge (EDC).
