Cambodia border markets to be built in Kampot and Svay Rieng provinces

Two more Cambodian border markets along the border between Cambodia and Vietnam have been planned for Kampot and Svay Rieng provinces.

The Head of the Royal Cambodian Government said that the establishment of Cambodia border markets will facilitate trade activities between the two countries, particularly along the border.

The announcement to build two new Cambodia border markets was made after the first Cambodia border market, located in Tbong Khmum province, shares border to Vietnam’s Tay Ninh province, was inaugurated on 24 December.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia, ordered the governors of Kampot and Svay Rieng provinces to find proper locations for building the border markets which are to facilitate local people living along the border area.

The first Cambodia border market called ‘Phsar Da’ was built over 2 hectares of land in a special economic zone in Tbong Khmum province’s Memot district. It is suited about 300 metres away from the border to Tay Ninh province. The market building cost US$2 million for which the budget came from the Vietnamese government.

The market is expected to be a lucrative hub and employment creator for traders from Cambodia and Vietnam. Meanwhile, it also is a blueprint for the further development of similar markets along the Cambodia-Vietnam border.

The market is for selling only products from Cambodia and Vietnam. Samdech Techo Hun Sen said the two new border markets will be built using the budget from the Royal Government of Cambodia.
