Australia to help strengthen construction safety in Cambodia

A total of 21 Cambodian officers will be sent for training on construction safety in Australia in March, as part of the Australian Government’s contribution to help strengthen construction safety standards in Cambodia.

The official announcement regarding the project was made during a meeting between the Australian Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Pablo Kang, and the Minister of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction H.E. Chea Sophara on 7 February.

During the meeting, H.E. Pablo Kang stated that the Australian Government has always supported the construction sector in Cambodia, especially regarding safety standards, such as sending officers to study further from experts in Australia.

The 21-person delegation to be sent to Australia this time include officers from the Ministry of Land Management, the Ministry of Environment, NGO officers, and other related officers.
The participants will be studying at the University of Queensland, from 2 to 22 March.

The project is also a response to the shortcomings in quality within the sector, as demonstrated by several recent building collapses causing a number of fatalities.

On 22 June 2019, a 7-storey building under construction in Sangkat 4, Sihanoukville, collapsed, resulting in 28 deaths and 26 injuries. Later, two further structures under construction collapsed causing fatalities; a pagoda site in Siem Reap and a hotel building in Kep.
