Hyundai eyes ASEAN market with first robotic plant in Indonesia

Hyundai Robotics, a subsidiary of Korean Hyundai Motors Company, was formed on 01 May 2020 to build its first industrial robotic automotive plant in Indonesia. This marks the first time that such a large and modernfacility has been installed in ASEAN.

The decision to install the plant in ASEAN came after the company reached what it called “a giant deal” of 370 orders from the Hyundai Motors Indonesian automotive plant in Indonesia.
Hyundai’s first manufacturing factory in Southeast Asia will be located in the Deltamas Industrial Complex in Jakarta and will be completed by 2022.

The plant will be built on 776,000 square metres with a manufacturing capacity of 250,000 vehicles. Hyundai expects the facility to be a vehicle supplier centre for the ASEAN market.

“We will do our best to make this facility a driving force for future development by building a new ASEAN market,” an official from Hyundai Robotics told the Robots &Automation News on 21 May.
Geo-strategically, the Korean tech giant has diverted its market to ASEAN, seeing major ASEAN markets including Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Singapore, which are expected to reach 4.49 million units by 2026, jumping from 3.16 million units in 2017.

For Cambodia, the market is not that large compared to the other regional markets, but it can be a part of the supply chain, especially for distribution and labour supply within the next four or five years. Linkage to the ASEAN Highway is one of the major reasons why the Royal Government of Cambodia is speeding up infrastructure development of major highways, as well as for domestic use.
