City Hall: All Unsafe Buildings Prohibited or to be Demolished as Necessary

Phnom Penh Governor H.E Khuong Sreng has urged all relevant authorities to ban, or demolish if necessary, for illegal and unsafe buildings and advised people to be more cautious about dilapidated buildings, according to the Ministry of Information.

The governor made the statement during a meeting with related officers regarding construction inspections in Phnom Penh on 24 July.

“For any construction of more than 5 or 10 floors which is wrongly built, constructors must cut the floor or demolish it if those buildings can cause severe risks to the public safety,” the governor stated.

He also added that to ensure the long-term quality of the construction, officers should also issue notices and instruct the people living in any dilapidated buildings across the capital’s 14 districts to be more cautious.

This inter-ministerial meeting was conducted after an incident on 24 July when a piece of concrete from an old building fell onto a car parked underneath the old apartment block in front of the BS Building in 7 Makara district.

Regarding this issue, City Hall issued a notice in March 2019 to advise people living in or near the location to be aware of the old building since it was 50% dilapidated and could collapse at any time.

At present, Phnom Penh has 245 dilapidated buildings which pose a high risk to both occupants and passers-by.
