Gov’t Mulls Including Sewage & Wastewater Treatment Fees in Water Bills

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) is considering including the sewage and wastewater treatment services fee into monthly water bills, perceiving it as a mechanism to help responsible companies maintain sufficient funds to upgrade and manage sewage system more effectively.

This is according to the 4th progress discussion on the project between MPWT and relevant officials on 26 May.

MPWT Undersecretary of State Kem Borey said the meeting discussed in detail the strategies and mechanisms for cost collection, as well as the overall setting of sewage and wastewater treatment services, with the aim of creating sustainable development for this sector.

He added that by including wastewater and sewage fee into the water bill will give responsible companies sufficient capital to enhance the system for both functional and aesthetical factors.

Recently, MPTW has also urged the Japanese technical team to help develop a more efficient wastewater management plan for Phnom Penh. (Read more)

Meanwhile, MPWT is also currently speeding up the progress of preparing the draft law for the wastewater and sewerage systems, in hope that it will help prevent and solve the issues of unregulated and unorganised sewages systems. (Read more)
