China’s Guangzhou City to Build Massive International Quarantine Complex

Guangzhou city in China is planning to build a massive quarantine complex for international travellers and local residents from high-risk areas as local hotels are not suitable to stop the spread of the new Delta variant, report SCMP.

Leading respiratory expert Zhong Nanshan brought this up after seeing the high level of transmissibility of the new Delta variant in the city.

The centre will have a total area of 250,000 sqm and will be able to accommodate up to 5,000 travellers. People there will be isolated according to strict rules to make sure they do not infect each other.

Mr Zhong added that Guangzhou receives between 80% and 90% of China’s international visitors, making it the most dangerous city in the country for CCOVID-19 infection.

“In the long term, Guangzhou and Shenzhen must build these kinds of facilities. Otherwise, when there are lots of cases in the future and we have to quarantine them in hotels, it will affect the economy and we cannot isolate them in a real sense,” said Mr Zhong.
