Over 95% of Illegal Construction on Phnom Penh River Demolished

Just one month after the official announcement, the Phnom Penh municipal authorities have already demolished over 95% of the illegal constructions such as fish farms, floating houses, and all unregulated structures on the Tonle Sap River within the boundaries of Phnom Penh.

This data was shared during a municipality meeting on Thursday 8 July chaired by the Council Chief of the Phnom Penh Municipality HE Pa Socheatvong and Phnom Penh Deputy Governor Mean Chanyada.

According to Mr Chanyada, there are a total of 1,472 fish farms, floating houses and unregulated structures along the river, of which 1,242 people have volunteered to relocate.

“This demonstrates that the implementation of measures run smoothly and successfully,” said Mr Chanyada.

The demolition and relocation campaign by the authorities started on 12 June after the administration gave one-week advance notice to all owners. (Read more)
