Gov’t to Allocate Over 1,600 Hectares of Land in Tbong Khmum Province as Protected Nature Reserve

The Ministry of Environment (MoE) together with relevant officials has agreed to register 1,643 hectares of the Boeung Karde area in Tbong Khmum province as a natural protected area which the government will later develop into eco-natural tourism and generic conservation centre.

According to the official meeting on Monday 26 July, this plot of land spreads over three communes—Chinik, Rokha Khnolm and Chhuk communes—in Krouch Chhmar district.

The study revealed that Boeung Karde is a wetland area rich in natural resources such as mangroves, fish, rare bird species, reptiles, mammals and crustaceans. This area consists of 150 hectares of rare tree species.

Regarding the protected nature reserve matter, the MoE has recently also prepared to list the over 42,000 hectares of wetlands of Prek Lapov Lake in Takeo province as a Ramsar site. (Read more)
