Probe Continues for Angkor Wat-like Temple; MCFA Requests More Proof from Thailand

Cambodia is still investigating the alleged Angkor Wat-like temple in Thailand, as the Minister of Culture and Fine Arts has recently requested more proof from the Thailand before making any further decisions.

The request was made during a meeting between the Minister of Culture and Fine Arts HE Phoeurng Sackona and the Thai Ambassador to Cambodia HE Panyarak Poolthup on Wednesday 4 August.

“We would like to request the Thai side to cooperate further in providing more detailed documents or proof of the temple in Buriram province so that the Cambodian side can have a basis to review and decide on further measures to avoid any negative consequences between the nations,” said HE Phoeung Sackona.

In response, HE Panyarak Poolthup promised to comply with the request but did not specify in the meeting when the documents would be sent.

This alleged Angkor Wat-like temple case has hit social media since June and also have caused anger among Cambodians.

Later in July, the abbot of the temple claimed that the construction did not copy the design of Angkor Wat, but the floorplan was originally designed based on the inspiration of some other temples in the area.

This is according to preliminary information obtained by Cambodian Embassy officials in Bangkok during their site inspection. (Read more)
