Labour Ministry Establishes​ an Advisory Council on Construction Safety Standard

The Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training (MLVT) yesterday announced the establishment of “Advisory Council for Promoting Health and Safety Standard for Construction Sector” aimed at ensuring the efficiency of the sector.

According to a six-pages document dated on 16th July 2018, the council comprises of 13 government representatives, 6 union representatives, 9 NGO representatives, and 6 representatives from employers.

Mr. Meas Proeksa, an Acting Vice Chairman of Cambodian Constructors Association (CCA) expressed his optimism on the establishment of this council.

“The council will help to reduce health problems as well as increase the work safety in the construction sector, especially for workers at the site,” he said. Currently, registered construction companies they always ensure the safety of construction workers and the proper safety management, he added.

However, the problem concern today is on construction safety of workers working under unregisterd sub-contractors who often do not spend extra money on safety and careless about the constructors’ health condition, he added.

The ministry or related authorities should consider permitting the project to a properly registered company, which not only benefits workers safety but also ensures the quality of construction and helps generate tax revenue for the government as well, said Mr. Meas Proeksa.

Meanwhile, regarding the work safety in the construction sector, the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction (MLMUPC) in cooperation with Cambodia Constructors Association (CCA) are currently working on a nationwide campaign to educate on-site construction workers, construction companies, as well as related government officers safety instruction (read more ).

Indeed, the establishment of the advisory council coincides with the strong growth of the construction sector, which contributed up to 11.5% of the overall economic growth (read more ).
