MME Vows to Expand Electricity Supply Network to 98% by 2022

About 84% of the 2 million households in Cambodia have access to electricity, and by 2022, the national electricity supply network will reach 98%.

This is according to the Minister of Mines and Energy, HE Suy Sem during the inauguration ceremony of the Director of the Department of Mines and Energy of Siem Reap Province on 17 May 2022.

HE Suy Sem said that per this energy supply policy, Cambodia has implemented electricity supply in 98% of the total 14,390 villages in Cambodia through transmission lines.

He added that 84% of the population of about 2 million houses are already connected to the grid, while by 2022, the expansion of the electricity supply nationwide will reach 98% of the total number of villages in In Cambodia.

HE Suy Sem stated that the remaining 2% of the villages have not yet been connected to the electricity grid which are remote villages in the forest with no access road or floating villages, etc. However, the ministry will try to identify various energy sources to supply those villages.

Cambodia currently has seven dams that act as the backbone of Cambodia’s energy sector. In addition, Cambodia also has coal-fired power plants and energy sources purchased from neighbouring countries.
