Tourism Minister Provides 5 Principles for Sustainable Coastal Development

Tourism Minister and Chief Deputy of the National Committee for Coastal Management and Development (NCCMD), Thong Khon has provided five principles to four coastal provinces for sustainable management and development of Cambodia’s coast.

According to a workshop on the legal norms for coastal management and development on 30 May 2022, the recommendation includes:

1. Protect and maintain beaches, and coastal lands, and develop public roads and green networks along the coast to create harmonious public spaces and attract tourists to coastal areas through land use planning and detailed urban planning.
2. Protect and maintain estuaries, rivers, canals, and waterways connected to the sea, which are state public property through the preparation of land use plans and detailed urban planning to manage sustainable and harmonious conservation and development.
3. Ensure the management and maintenance of salt fields, which are a cultural, historical, and Cambodian food security source through the management of land development in accordance with the regulations of urbanization and land use in force.
4. Preserve the mountains, forests, and natural landscapes of the coastal area as historical heritage through the implementation of measures, management plans, and regular monitoring of development.
5. Enhance the conservation management of islands and archipelagos by ensuring highly efficient natural resources, landscapes, and biodiversity around the islands, with a clear monitoring plan.
