Gov’t Drafts Law to Boost Inland Shipping Competitiveness

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport is working on a draft law to promote inland waterways and ports, to boost the competitiveness of Cambodia’s ports with other regional and international players.

HE Sun Chanthol, Minister of Public Works and Transport, instructed the technical working group to refine the draft law during a meeting on 13 March 2023, to ensure the development of the water transport sector, better port management, reliable navigation services, and safety and security.

Addressing the meeting, HE Sun Chanthol stated that the draft law will enhance Cambodia’s competitiveness and promote the use of inland waterways to attract more investment in the sector, especially from foreign investors. The law is designed to support Cambodia’s economic growth and development by leveraging its strategic location at the center of the Mekong River Basin, which has the potential to connect with neighboring countries and beyond.

“We need to ensure that the draft law is up to date with the current social innovations and international context to provide more benefits to the nation,” said HE Sun Chanthol, instructing the technical working group to update the comments made in the meeting.

The draft law will be submitted to the Council of Jurists of the Council of Ministers for further review to ensure it aligns with Cambodia’s legal framework and international standards.

The draft law is a significant step towards developing Cambodia’s inland shipping industry and promoting economic growth. It is expected to strengthen the country’s position as a key player in the Mekong River Basin and beyond, attracting more investment and contributing to the country’s overall development.
