GIZ Germany Pioneers Training of Cambodian Experts in Ancient Stone Preservation

Experts from the prestigious GIZ Institute of Germany are joining hands with the Apsara National Authority to train 20 Cambodian trainees in conserving ancient stone at the iconic Angkor resort in Siem Reap. The groundbreaking training, conducted on-site, equips participants with vital skills in cleaning, neutralising salt, and fortifying ancient stone structures, ensuring their preservation for generations to come.

The comprehensive training course, spanning over a year, has attracted the finest 20 talents from various departments of the APSARA Authority. German teacher, Helen Jacobsen, takes the lead in imparting invaluable expertise to the eager trainees, who will become the torchbearers of ancient stone conservation in Cambodia.

Mr Rick Reth, Technical Officer of the Department of Preservation and Archeology at APSARA Authority, emphasised the significance of this collaborative effort between GIZ Germany and the department. Over the past two years, the program has thrived, empowering the trainees to apply their newfound knowledge in preserving ancient temples across the country. As these skilled individuals emerge as the next generation of Cambodian conservationists, they will play a vital role in safeguarding Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage.

GIZ Germany’s unwavering commitment to enhancing Cambodia’s preservation capabilities goes beyond this current training. The institute plans to implement 13 programs for the second generation of stone conservation skills, with the current cohort marking the seventh group of participants. This transformative endeavour aims to empower Cambodia with a growing pool of experts in ancient stone preservation.

As the training journey progresses, GIZ Germany remains optimistic that by mid-2024, the second generation of skilled conservationists will have completed their training, further strengthening Cambodia’s prowess in safeguarding its treasured historical sites.

Indeed, this endeavour builds on a strong foundation of past collaborations between GIZ and APSARA Authority, where the first generation of trainees has already demonstrated their exceptional abilities in preserving ancient temples with utmost precision and reverence.

As Cambodia continues to cherish its cultural heritage and invite global interest in its iconic landmarks, the partnership between GIZ Germany and APSARA Authority heralds a bright future, where Cambodia stands at the forefront of expertly conserving its ancient stone marvels.
