Gov’t Bans Fishing & Docking Near Submarine Power Lines

The Preah Sihanouk Provincial Administration has instituted a significant measure prohibiting fishing and docking activities at specific locations along the submarine power lines concealed beneath the seabed in Sihanoukville and Koh Kong provinces effective from 16 August 2023.

This regulatory action, born out of a proactive stance towards safeguarding the country’s maritime assets, has far-reaching implications for various vessel owners. The advisory is directed at owners of a diverse range of vessels, encompassing boats, ferries, and watercraft navigating waters above the 22 kV and 35 kV power lines.

These guidelines pertain to geographical areas spanning Sihanoukville and Koh Kong provinces, enlisting key island locations such as Koh Toteung, Koh Sdach, Koh Samit, and Koh Sdach. Koh Samit, Koh Ampil Toch, Koh Ampil Thom, Koh Smach, Koh Sramoch, Koh Mnas, Koh Ta Taem, and Koh Rong.

The directive is unequivocal: Anchoring and activities within the vicinity of the power cable lanes are strictly forbidden. Moreover, a minimum distance of 200 meters from the submerged power lines must be upheld to mitigate potential hazards and avert any inadvertent impact. The rationale behind this stringent stipulation is anchored in preserving the integrity of vital power infrastructure, which, if compromised, could culminate in critical safety risks.

As a prudent prelude to maritime endeavors, all citizens are enjoined to meticulously peruse the designated prohibited zones prior to anchoring. By exercising due diligence, maritime enthusiasts can contribute to the preservation of the power lines’ integrity and the overall safety of the maritime environment.

Noteworthy is the ongoing initiative to establish a medium voltage network, concealed both beneath the sea and the sky, across select islands in Sihanoukville and Koh Kong provinces. This milestone project, inaugurated in June, propels island communities into an era of sustainable progress. Islanders’ access to affordable electricity, derived from the national grid, not only enhances their quality of life but also catalyzes local investment opportunities. (Read more)
