New PM Dr Hun Manet Advocates for Workplace Nurseries & Kindergartens to Support Cambodian Workers

Cambodia’s new Prime Minister, HE Dr Hun Manet, has proposed the establishment of community nurseries and kindergartens in close proximity to factories. This visionary move would facilitate working parents to ensure their children receive proper care and early education.

HE Dr Hun Manet made the recommendation while addressing over 18,000 factory workers in Takhmao city, Kandal province, on 1 September 2023.

The PM underscored the government’s commitment to augment the presence of community nurseries and kindergartens within factories, corporate establishments, and public and private institutions. This strategic measure not only encourages timely breastfeeding among mothers but also recognizes the significance of breast milk as the first vaccine for infants, offering crucial protection against a spectrum of serious illnesses while providing essential nutrients for healthy growth.

Furthermore, the proposal to establish community nurseries and kindergartens adjacent to workplaces has far-reaching advantages. It anticipates sustained workforce engagement, bolsters child enrolment rates, and ensures children are adequately prepared for primary school. Additionally, it alleviates the childcare responsibilities of parents, particularly mothers, further promoting breastfeeding practices and nurturing the well-being of both women and children.

PM Dr Hun Manet’s position reflects Cambodia’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment for its workforce while championing early childhood development and maternal health.
