Gov’t Reaffirms Stand to Protect Cultural Heritage Over Pagoda Construction at Wat Phum Man Pha, Thailand

The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, Cambodia, has once again reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to preserving Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage by closely monitoring the construction of a pagoda at Wat Phum Man Pha, Borei Rom province in Thailand. The pagoda’s design closely mirrors the iconic Khmer Angkor Wat, a cause for concern among many Cambodians. As of the latest announcement on 26 September 2023, no further construction activities have taken place.

In response to mounting concerns over this issue, the ministry has revealed its dedicated efforts to safeguard Cambodia’s cultural identity. Their involvement dates back to 2021, with a professional team closely monitoring construction activities from the very outset.

The ministry’s previous actions primarily involved diplomatic channels, establishing communication with both the Thai Embassy in Cambodia and the Thai Ministry of Culture. Researchers were dispatched to inspect the construction site, and their findings confirmed that construction had not yet commenced.

The Cambodian government has consistently maintained a resolute stance against any attempts to replicate its national identity. This stance is reinforced by a combination of diplomatic engagement, technical verifications, on-site inspections, and adherence to national and international legal frameworks when necessary.

The ministry’s dedicated working group continues to engage in professional and diplomatic processes to ensure the preservation of Cambodia’s cultural heritage. Their vigilance serves as a testament to Cambodia’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding its cultural treasures for future generations.
