Japan Extends Generous Grant of US$300,000 to Safeguard Historic Sambor Prei Kuk Resort

In a gesture of cultural preservation, the Government of Japan has announced a generous grant of US$300,000 to Cambodia for the enhancement and rehabilitation of the Sambor Prei Kuk resort in Kampong Thom province.

A press release from the Embassy of Japan in Cambodia on 12 December 2023, highlighted Japan’s commitment to supporting the “Human Resource Development Project for the Maintenance and Rehabilitation of the Sambor Prei Kuk Resort.”

This substantial grant aims to empower Cambodian students and young professionals through vocational training, enhancing their capabilities to contribute effectively to the preservation and restoration of this historically significant resort area. Japan’s support underscores its dedication to fostering sustainable cultural heritage initiatives.

The Sambor Prei Kuk temple, situated in Sambo village, Kampong Thom province, holds immense historical and cultural significance. As Japan extends this new grant, it builds upon its ongoing efforts since 2020, which include the construction of a training facility and the provision of materials and equipment for conservation work at the site.

Japan’s involvement in the maintenance and repair of the Sambor Prei Kuk resort dates back to a joint venture fund project from 2009 to 2012, totaling US$638,967. The multifaceted assistance included the procurement of materials and equipment, contributing to the restoration work undertaken during these four years.

This historical gem traces its roots along the Stung Sen River, approximately 28 km northeast of Kampong Thom provincial town.

The temple, the old capital ofIsanbura, sprawling over 3,000 hectares of flat land, holds a pivotal place in Cambodia’s history. Situated about 181km from the Angkor capital in Siem Reap province, 170km from the majestic Preah Vihear temple in Preah Vihear province, and 196km from the bustling city of Phnom Penh, Sambor Prei Kuk was once the central hub of Brahmanism dedicated to Shiva or Iso.
