In a groundbreaking move towards environmental preservation, the Cambodian government, led by Prime Minister Samdech Hun Manet, has declared a halt on the issuance of mining licenses in the ecologically significant Prey Lang area. This pivotal decision was announced during the closing ceremony of the 2023 work review meeting and the 2024 work direction of the Ministry of Environment on 21 December 2023.

The PM underscored the government’s commitment to environmental stewardship, stating that no new mining licenses would be granted in Prey Lang. Existing licenses will be maintained, but any expansion plans for current mining operations in this crucial region will not be permitted.

This move follows the Minister of Mines and Energy’s recent affirmation that future mining licenses will only be considered after a thorough review, emphasizing principles aligned with conservation.
