Aeon’s Strategic Leap: Revolutionising Logistics with AI Precision

In a groundbreaking move set to redefine the landscape of Japanese retail logistics, Aeon, the prominent retail group, is embarking on an ambitious overhaul of its logistics operations. The initiative, slated for implementation next spring across approximately 3,300 domestic stores, is a proactive response to the impending legal restrictions on driver overtime, set to take effect in April, according to Nikkei Asia, published on 25 December 2023.

Aeon’s innovative strategy involves leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and optimising truckload rates to enhance logistical efficiency significantly. The company aims to mitigate the impact of the “2024 problem,” a consequence of new legal limits on truck driver overtime, which is anticipated to disrupt industries reliant on timely goods transport.

The key focus of Aeon’s approach is the enhancement of load rates for trucks, aiming for a 5% to 10% reduction in total truck use. By optimising load rates, especially for morning and later deliveries, Aeon aims to eliminate time-based deliveries, a move that promises to streamline operations and reduce unloading time.

Additionally, Aeon plans to harness the power of AI to refine driving routes, targeting a 5% to 10% reduction in total driving distance. This departure from conventional methods underscores Aeon’s commitment to technological innovation in navigating the evolving landscape of logistics.

The decision to implement these transformative changes follows successful pilot projects, including a notable initiative in Kyushu, southern Japan, conducted in collaboration with industry competitors. As the logistics sector braces for the challenges of capped overtime, Aeon emerges as a pioneer, leading the way in adopting forward-thinking solutions.

In anticipation of these changes, other industry players, including convenience store chains Lawson, Seven-Eleven Japan, and FamilyMart, have collaborated on joint delivery projects to address the imminent logistics challenges.
