Japan’s Support Elevates Drainage Maintenance & Flood Prevention Expertise in Phnom Penh

Japan extends a helping hand through comprehensive training programs. The culmination of these efforts was marked by the closing workshop of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Partnership Program in the Sewerage System, organised jointly by the Department of Public Works and Transport of Phnom Penh and the Office of Water and Sewerage in Kitakyushu, Japan, on 18 January 2024.

This substantial two-year project focused on enhancing operational capacity and maintenance practices for the sewer system in Phnom Penh. The workshop highlighted significant achievements during this period, with a dual focus on building expertise in sewer system management and flood damage mitigation.

The first major outcome involves the successful training of personnel equipped to conduct proper maintenance and management of the sewer system. This training adheres to established guidelines, ensuring the sustainable upkeep of the crucial infrastructure.

The second accomplishment lies in the development of human resources adept at addressing flood damage, benefiting both the populace and governmental initiatives. By imparting essential skills and knowledge, the project contributes to strengthening the city’s resilience against potential flood-related challenges.

As a lasting legacy, the project leaves Phnom Penh with a comprehensive manual on sewer system management. This invaluable resource equips local authorities to implement daily maintenance routines effectively. Concurrently, ongoing awareness programs and community engagement initiatives aim to garner public cooperation, fostering a collective effort towards enhancing the urban environment.
