From Plastic Waste to Asphalt Concrete

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) has expressed it strong interest in and urged further study on a new technology invented by two Cambodian university students which can transform plastic waste into Asphalt Concrete (AC).

The two students, Ms Ly Sokanha from Zaman University and Ms Tan Bunhourng from American University of Phnom Penh, worked together under a project entitled ‘Eco Plastic’ and supported by Harpswell Foundation Cambodia.

Their eco-plastic project is an eco-friendly method of plastic recycling by turning plastic waste into usable products. As AC is essential for the road construction industry, this new innovation can be highly beneficial and cost effective.

The invention recently won an award from the Cambodia Business Model Competition organised by the National University of Management and the Cambodia International Education Support Foundation (CIESF). Sokhana and Bunhourng will represent Cambodia at the next competition in Bhutan.

In response to their innovation, Minister of Public Works and Transport H.E. Sun Chanthol has officially met with the two students and expressed his strong support for them.

“This is very great innovation as it can help a lot in the road construction sector. This is an idea that we have to support and continue the study to further achieve something bigger. We are very glad that Cambodia has geniuses like these two,” said the minister.

“I wish them all the best in their next competition so that they can keep creating other useful innovations for Cambodia,” he added.
