Pm: Construction of Buildings More Than 3 Storeys Banned on Cambodia’s Islands

Construction of buildings higher than 3 storeys will not be permitted on Koh Rong or any other islands of Cambodia, according to an order by Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen during his official visit to Koh Rong and the grand opening of the Royal Sands Koh Rong on 23 April.

“All relevant ministries have to closely monitor the private companies and make sure there are no buildings of more than 3 storeys appearing on this kind of island,” PM Samdech Hun Sen said.

In addition to this warning, PM Samdech Hun Sen also clarified to the public that Koh Rong belongs to the government, not to any private company.

“Koh Rong belongs to the government, not to the private sector. Those private companies just got the concession from the government to develop the area. Now, we will start to recheck the concessions. For those concession holders who do nothing and illegally sell them to other companies, we will revoke their concession and seize the land back,” he added.

Moreover, PM Samdech Hun Sen also emphasised about illegal land encroachers who show off their power and illegally occupy land in Koh Rong.

“Those encroachers have to urgently move out. Those people are not the original Koh Rong people; most of them moved from Phnom Penh and illegally possess land there. So, get out before we take any legal action,” said PM Samdech Hun Sen, “Forest encroachment is also an issue. Relevant officers have to take immediate action on this issue as well to make sure there is no deforestation on the island anymore.”

PM Samdech Hun Sen also ordered the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction to solve the 584 plots of land issue for the local people on Koh Rong as soon as possible.

“We have to work together to end any illegal activities on the island and help each other to develop this island as well as other islands in positive ways,” he said.
