Preliminary Studies for Phnom Penh Metro Project Launched

In a significant step towards modernising urban transport in Cambodia, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) has partnered with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to initiate preliminary studies for the Phnom Penh Metro project. The aim is to assess the feasibility of a modern public transport system designed to alleviate traffic congestion in the capital city.

The first meeting of the study team took place on March 5, led by HE Leng Thunyuthea, Secretary of State at MPWT, alongside a team of experts from AIIB. Representatives from various inter-ministerial bodies participated to contribute insights and feedback on the project’s progress and identify key areas for further investigation.

During the meeting, attendees reviewed the status of the project and discussed strategies for integrating input from experts, consultants, and stakeholders. Following the meeting, the project implementation team and AIIB experts conducted site visits at critical locations across Phnom Penh. Key sites included major transportation corridors, existing bus terminals, the Phnom Penh Railway Station, and both Phnom Penh and Techo International Airports. These visits aimed to pinpoint priority routes, bridges, and roadways essential for the proposed metro system.

The Phnom Penh Metro Rail Project hailed as a transformative initiative for public transportation, was officially signed by MPWT and AIIB on 26 September 2024, in Beijing, China. As the project moves forward, it is expected to significantly enhance urban mobility and reduce traffic bottlenecks in the bustling capital.
