Digital Twin Tech Powers US$114 Million Urban Revitalization in Manaus

A massive urban transformation is underway in the heart of the Amazon, as ADAX Consultants leverages cutting-edge “digital twin” technology to revitalize high-risk neighborhoods. The Social and Environmental Program for Manaus and the Interior aims to relocate thousands of families and provide modern infrastructure to over 60,000 residents.

The project, which carries an estimated cost of US$114 million, focuses on the vulnerable areas along the Igarapé do Quarenta stream, including the Japiim, Coroado, and Armando Mendes neighborhoods.

By adopting Bentley Systems’ BIM (Building Information Modeling) and digital twin software, ADAX has shifted from traditional construction methods to a highly integrated digital workflow. The impact on efficiency has been historic:

  • Cost Savings: Project costs were slashed by 90%.
  • Time Efficiency: Delivery timelines were reduced by 59%.
  • Human Impact: The project is relocating 2,400 families from flood-prone, high-risk zones into 752 new homes across 94 housing blocks.

Marcellus Campêlo, Executive Coordinator at ADAX, noted that the project involved 35 professionals collaborating across four different Brazilian states. Using a “federated” data model, the team managed over 12,000 files and 105 gigabytes of data seamlessly.

“The integration of housing, road infrastructure, and sanitation projects was made possible through these digital solutions,” Campêlo stated. He highlighted that the technology not only improved security and compliance but also eliminated roughly 11,000 hours of travel time to and from project sites.

The revitalization covers a vast 340,000 square meters and includes new sanitation networks, public spaces, and roads designed to reduce the spread of disease and urban inequality.

Construction is currently in progress, with a scheduled completion date of October 2027. As cities worldwide grapple with climate change and rapid urbanization, the Manaus project serves as a blueprint for how digital twin technology can create safer, more sustainable urban environments.
