Water and Electricity Shortages Due to Booming Construction

The shortage of water and electricity across the country over the last few weeks is due to the sharp growth in construction, according to the government’s spokesperson unit.

According to a press release dated 22 March 2019, the unit said that “this event [shortages] is due to the hot weather caused from changes in climate creating unusual water shortage combined with the sharp rise in consumption in the construction sector, which has grown by 700%”.

This sharp increase has occurred mostly in the more developed areas such as Phnom Penh, Kandal, Kampong Speu, Sihanoukville, Battambang and Siem Reap.

With this increase in high-rise buildings, Cambodia’s electricity resources can no longer provide enough supply in the dry season and these electricity shortages will continue until May 2019.

However, in response to this problem, the government is now negotiating with Turkey to a bring 200 megawatts power ship to Cambodia.

According to data from the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), Cambodia consumed about 25.5 megawatt hours of electricity daily in 2018 and in 2019 daily consumption has jumped to about 31 megawatt hours of electricity.
