US$200 Million Water Treatment Facility to Be Built in Preah Sihanoukville

The government plans to build a water treatment facility worth US$200 million in Preah Sihnoukville province with a capacity to convert 60,000 cubic metres of contaminated water to clean water per day.

During a field visit to the water treatment facility sites in Preah Sihnoukville city, Senior Minister and Minister of the Ministry of Public Works and Transports H.E. Sun Chanthol said the construction of the water treatment facility is to solve the problem of wastewater in the province.

Due to the rapid inflow of investments, with construction of condominiums, resorts, and commercial buildings and garment factories, Preah Sihanoukville province has developed quickly in recent years which has led to an increase of wastewater, according to H.E. Sun Chanthol.

“Due to development in the country, particularly in Preah Sihanoukville province, the ministry has not conducted a study of a master plan and thought that the capacity of the existing water treatment facilities, which are capable to covert 5,700 cubic metres per day, were able to convert the wastewater, but because of more investment and an influx of foreign tourists, the amount is over the prediction of the ministry and local authorities regarding the amount of wastewater in the province,” H.E. Sun Chanthol said.

The budget of US$200 million also includes the construction of a drainage system in the Preah Sihnoukville city.

According to H.E. Sun Chanthol, the government is seeking the budget to implement the project from China in the form of a concessional loan or assistance.

Currently, there are four water treatment facilities in the province which are capable of converting a maximum of 5,700 cubic metres of wastewater per day, while up to 25,000 cubic metres of wastewater are released per day in the province.
