Bangkok Airways to Invest in Koh Kong Former Airport

Thai-based airline Bangkok Airways is to invest in re-building the former Koh Kong airport in Khemarak Phoumin City soon after the government has given greenlight in the June meeting.

Speaking with Construction & Property Magazine via phone call on 16 July, Mr Sok Sothy, spokesman and deputy governor of Koh Kong Province said that Bangkok Airways is currently asking for the permission to build the airport under Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) theme and construction is expected to take place soon.

“According to the committee’s decision in the meeting session (June 14), it is possible soon [construction], depending on the establishment [study] of a committee before we start,” he said.

Mr Sok Sothy also said that the investment project, Bangkok Airways will as well look to make a joint venture with local firm.

Mr Sin Chansereyvutha, spokesman for the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA) confirmed on the 15 July that currently the redeveloping project is undergoing study on environmental, social, and technical impact.

Mr Sin Chansereyvutha also confirmed that the reconstruction would require an expansion of the airport to make a longer and stronger airport in accordance to the technical standards. The project is expected to cost more than US$42 million with construction is expected to finish between three to five years.

Regarding the expansion plan in addition to the existing 125 hectares of land, Mr Sok Sothy said that the project might affected about 30 hectares of land belong to the people and 20 hectares belong to the Ministry of Industry and Handicraft.

“The provincial administration has a duty to inform the people that we will have construction. The provincial administration has met with the city, and the commune chief, and we have set out the geographic coordinate where the affected areas are,” he said.
