Battambang Province Set as Economic Core Zone in Country’s Northwest

The royal government has set Battambang province as the core economic zone in the northwest of the county by setting up the strategic plan, vision, and plans for developing the province to achieve the goal by 2030.

In the sub-decree on the usage of the Battambang Urban Planning Master Plan, the government set the targets by establishing an urbanisation zone for residential, commercial, and tourism development zones.

The sub-decree, which was made public on 28 May, stated that the development plan encompassed by the Battambang Urban Planning Master Plan focuses on mapping agricultural zones, industrial zones, and tourism zones.

For developing Battambang province to become the economic core zone in the country’s northwest, the government will prepare and develop five main points including –urbanization, agricultural processing and industrial, natural, cultural and historical tourism, and integrating multiple zones for the economy, society, cultural, and natural resources, according to the statement.

“This plan is the important regulation tool for development in each zone throughout the province and to facilitate with other set plans in ensuring sustainable management, prevention, distribution, and usage of land, environment, and natural resources,” the sub-decree reads.

“So, the implementation of the Battambang Urban Planning Master Plan is most necessary for the development and protection of society, the economy and the environment of the province to become an economic core zone in the northwest in Cambodia,” the sub-decree continues.

Battambang province covers 11,744 square km and by 2018 the total population in the province was 1.2 million, and by 2030 the total population is expected to increase to 1.5 million.
