Bavet City Completes Strategic Landfill and Advances Wastewater Treatment

New environmental facilities set to transform urban hygiene and flood resilience in Svay Rieng’s key economic border hub

Bavet City has reached a significant milestone in its journey toward sustainable urban development with the successful completion of its first modern sanitary landfill. According to the latest progress report from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport released on February 9, 2026, the landfill sub-project is now 100% complete. Meanwhile, construction on the city’s comprehensive wastewater treatment plant and drainage network is actively advancing, having surpassed the 6% mark as of early 2026.

The newly finished sanitary landfill represents a major leap forward for the city’s environmental management. Designed to meet international hygiene standards, the facility boasts a total storage capacity of 632,784 cubic meters. The project was finalized at the end of 2025 and is now prepared to transition into full operational status. This facility will allow for the safe, controlled disposal of solid waste, moving the city away from traditional, unmanaged dumpsites and significantly reducing the risk of groundwater contamination and airborne pollution.

In addition to solid waste improvements, the city is undergoing a massive overhaul of its liquid waste and water management systems. This phase of the project includes the construction of a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant, a specialized sewage collection network, and a separate stormwater drainage system designed to prevent seasonal flooding.

As of the end of January 2026, construction on these interconnected systems has reached 6.11% completion. The wastewater treatment plant is a central component of this initiative, aimed at ensuring that all residential and industrial runoff is properly treated before being released back into the environment. By separating sewage from rainwater, the new infrastructure will not only improve public health but also protect the city’s roads and buildings from the damaging effects of stagnant floodwaters.

These infrastructure projects are part of a broader strategic effort to elevate Bavet City’s status as a key economic gateway and a “Liveable City.” With over 1,000 factories and multiple special economic zones in Svay Rieng province, the modernization of these essential services is critical for supporting the region’s rapid industrial growth. By integrating high-tech waste solutions with community-focused planning, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport is proactively building a resilient, cleaner future for Bavet’s residents and businesses alike.
