Cambodia & India Collaborate to Establish Science Library in Battambang

In a ground-breaking initiative aimed at improving educational resources in Cambodia, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation of Cambodia and the Ministry of External Affairs of India. The agreement, finalised on 17 February 2025, will pave the way for the establishment of a state-of-the-art science library in Ratanak Mondul district, Battambang province.

The MoU was signed by HE Hem Vandy, Cambodia’s Minister of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation, alongside HE Vanlalvawna Bawitlung, India’s Ambassador to Cambodia. This partnership reflects a shared commitment between the two nations to foster scientific and technological knowledge, particularly in rural communities.

Minister Hem Vandy expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating, “This initiative underscores our dedication to empowering rural areas through enhanced scientific and technological education. We are excited to explore further opportunities for collaboration under the Quick Impact Project framework.”

India’s Ambassador Bawitlung highlighted the significance of the project for the younger generation, emphasizing its role in igniting interest in science and innovation. “This library will not only promote a passion for science but will also encourage young minds to engage directly with scientific concepts,” he said. “As the demand for education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) continues to grow, this library will serve as a critical resource in bridging the knowledge gap in these vital fields.”

The MoU outlines that the Indian government will provide essential support for the procurement of books, scientific instruments, educational materials, and laboratory equipment crucial for the library’s establishment. This influx of resources is set to enrich the educational experience for students, researchers, and the wider community, enhancing their understanding of key scientific principles and technological advancements.

This collaboration not only represents a significant step toward educational development in Cambodia but also sets a precedent for future initiatives focused on elevating science and technology in the region. The establishment of the science library marks an exciting new chapter for Battambang and a promising investment in the future of its youth.
