Cambodia and Vietnam Unveil New International Border Gate to Double Trade and Deepen Partnership

Meuchey-Tan Nam Border Crossing Elevated to International Status, Symbolizing Economic and Friendship Ties

On December 8, 2025, the Prime Minister of Cambodia, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, and the Prime Minister of Vietnam, His Excellency Pham Minh Chinh, officially inaugurated the Meuchey-Tan Nam International Border Gate.

During the ceremony, both Prime Ministers regarded the Meunchey-Tan Nam International Border Gate as a crucial link connecting the economic, cooperation, and trade routes, as well as a symbol of the valuable traditional friendship between Cambodia and Vietnam.

The Meunchey International Border Gate is located in Meunchey Village, Krabao Commune, Kamchay Mear District, Prey Veng Province, Cambodia, and faces the Tan Nam International Border Gate in Tan Bien District, Tay Ninh Province, Vietnam.

The Meunchey-Tan Nam border crossing was initially a corridor used by residents of the two nearby countries to exchange goods and agricultural products. Around 2010, the Royal Government of Cambodia transformed it into a regional border gate. Following that, the Royal Government of Cambodia decided to upgrade the crossing from a regional gate to the “Meunchey International Border Gate” on April 30, 2014.

The Prime Ministers of both countries noted that the Meunchey International Border Gate currently facilitates a bustling cross-border trade exchange. As of November 2025, the total trade volume through the gate amounted to 1.384 trillion Riel, generating a total customs tax revenue of 19.09 billion Riel.

A core expectation is the massive boost to bilateral commerce. The two governments have set an ambitious target to raise the annual trade volume from approximately $10 billion to $20 billion in the near future. To achieve this, both Prime Ministers committed to deepening economic connectivity, focusing on breakthroughs in areas such as digital economy development, institutional alignment, and infrastructure links. Furthermore, they urged relevant authorities to devise concrete plans to facilitate the flow of goods and services, with a particular emphasis on high-potential sectors like agriculture and agro-processing.

Beyond economics, the vision extends to comprehensive cooperation. Both nations are dedicated to strengthening coordination in border management, upholding security, and preventing cross-border crimes and illegal activities. They reaffirmed a consistent stance of not allowing any hostile forces to use one country’s territory to undermine the other. The two leaders also emphasized the importance of maintaining a peaceful, stable, cooperative, and sustainably developed shared border, which includes a commitment to expedite negotiations on the remaining 16 percent of the border that has yet to be fully demarcated. To foster long-term ties, Vietnam offered its support to Cambodia in enhancing human resource quality, including an increase in scholarships for Cambodian students, while both leaders called for promoting the tradition of solidarity and friendship, especially among the youth.

Recently, in the area of the Cambodia-Vietnam border gate of Moeun Chey, there has also been a request to establish a port and plans to establish a special economic zone in the future. (Read more)

It is worth noting that the day of the inauguration coincided with an attack launched by Thailand against Cambodia, both by land and air, along the Cambodia-Thailand border. (more news)
