PM Signifies Demographic Census Data as a Compass for Policymaking With Over 750,000 Enterprises Updated

As of March 2022, Cambodia boasts a total of 753,670 operational firms, showcasing a staggering 49% increase compared to the 2011 economic census, which recorded 505,134 enterprises. This significant revelation was released the Ministry of Planning on 26 December under the auspices of Samdech Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, which disclosed a remarkable surge in operational enterprises.

The comprehensive 2022 economic census, focusing on two key sectors—industry (7%) and services (93%), unravels a dynamic economic landscape. Urban areas host 52.5% of these enterprises, with a noteworthy 69.1% being women-owned—a testament to Cambodia’s commitment to fostering gender-inclusive economic participation.

Employing a substantial 2.98 million individuals, these enterprises play a pivotal role in Cambodia’s economic narrative. Impressively, 1.84 million of these employees are women, reflecting the nation’s strides towards gender diversity in the workforce.

Prime Minister Samdech Hun Manet underscored the census’s significance as a compass for policymaking, providing a comprehensive map of Cambodia’s economic activities and structures.

He emphasized, “Data is very important because it is a map and a compass for us, both in terms of policy and economic frameworks in Cambodia, providing essential information on the status of economic activities and structures for the formulation of policies, plans, and other stakeholders.”

This 2022 economic census marks Cambodia’s second, the inaugural one being conducted in 2011. The growth in operational enterprises signals a robust and dynamic economic ecosystem, positioning Cambodia as a key player in the regional and global economic landscape.
