Cambodia Mulls Adopting EU Construction Standards

The Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction (MLMUPC) is considering adopting Eurocodes into the Cambodian national building codes, to raise the construction sector to another standard level.

111 Cambodian experts from the government and the private sector recently attended a two-day workshop on construction standards from the European Union, known as Eurocodes, in late March.

During the workshop, participants learned about Eurocodes for building and infrastructure design, technical details on concrete and steel structures, as well as geographical design.

Ms Camilla Lombard, Deputy Head of Cooperation – Counsellor at the Delegation of the European Union to Cambodia, said that the Eurocodes cover all principal construction materials and are the most up-to-date codes of practice, offering the possibility to each country to adapt them to their specific conditions.

In response, MLMUPC Secretary of State Monirith Leang said, “I strongly believe that today’s workshop on Eurocodes awareness is very useful and great input for our Cambodian national building design codes and standards which are under consideration.”

Eurocodes are the standard system of civil construction and architecture in the European Union and to date are also being considered in Singapore.
