Cambodia to Send Archaeologists Inspect Alleged Angkor Wat-Like Temple in Thailand

The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts keeps investigating the alleged Angkor Wat-like temple in Thailand, with a plan to send archaeologists to inspect the site after the pandemic subsides.

According to Secretary of State of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts HE Hap Touch, Cambodia will send experts in archaeology and temple architects to Thailand soon, stating that the trip is difficult at the moment given the pandemic.

“The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts is not silent. The ministry is working with Cambodian officials in Sa Kaeo and the Cambodian embassy in Bangkok, so we can continue to cooperate and complete this project,” he told Khmer Times.

In early August, Minister of Culture and Fine Arts HE Phoeurng Sackona also met with the Thai Ambassador to Cambodia HE Panyarak Poolthup to discuss this matter, while also requesting more proof from Thailand before making any further decisions. (Read more)

This alleged Angkor Wat-like temple case has hit social media since June and also have caused anger among Cambodians.

Later in July, the abbot of the temple claimed that the construction did not copy the design of Angkor Wat, but the floorplan was originally designed based on the inspiration of some other temples in the area. (Read more)
