Cambodia and UK Forge Strategic Alliance to Elevate Bilateral Trade, Aiming for US$1 Billion Milestone by 2022

In a resounding display of mutual commitment, the Ministry of Commerce of Cambodia and the Ministry of Commerce of the United Kingdom have recently inked a momentous Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement paves the way for the establishment of a joint trade and investment forum, aimed at expanding bilateral trade between the two nations. Notably, the trade volume between Cambodia and the UK soared to nearly US$1 billion in 2022, showcasing the remarkable growth in their economic partnership.

During the signing ceremony held on 26 May 2023, HE Pan Sosak, Cambodia’s Minister of Commerce, and HE Dominic Williams, the esteemed Ambassador of the United Kingdom, reaffirmed their dedication to fostering enhanced trade ties between the two countries.

The joint trade and investment forum will serve as a catalyst for bolstering bilateral trade, with a primary focus on facilitating the export of Cambodia’s exceptional products to the UK market. Key sectors for potential export growth include agriculture and industries, offering promising opportunities for Cambodian businesses. Simultaneously, the forum aims to attract increased British investment into Cambodia, further strengthening economic cooperation.

Expressing his optimism, HE Pan Sosak emphasized that the Cambodia-UK Joint Trade and Investment Forum represents a significant stride towards reinforcing sustainable trade collaboration. By enhancing the investment and business environment, this strategic partnership is poised to propel national economic diversification and elevate Cambodia’s position on the global trade stage.

The inaugural forum will feature crucial discussions on a range of topics, including insights into the economic policies of both nations, preferential tariff policies for developing countries, and Cambodia’s new investment law, which aligns with the vision of resilient green growth.

Furthermore, trade policy meetings will convene inter-ministerial representatives from the Royal Government of Cambodia and the British Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia, fostering productive dialogues on policy implementation and exploring avenues to expand trade in goods, services, and investments.

Notably, the trade volume between Cambodia and the UK experienced a remarkable surge in 2022, surpassing expectations at a staggering total of US$977.43 million, indicating a remarkable year-on-year growth rate of 24.42%.

As Cambodia and the UK fortify their trade alliance through the establishment of the joint trade and investment forum, the stage is set for even greater economic prosperity. This partnership not only reinforces the strength of their bilateral ties but also opens up vast opportunities for businesses, investors, and economies on both ends. With a shared vision for a robust and sustainable future, the Cambodia-UK trade collaboration is poised to leave an indelible mark on the global economic landscape.
