Cambodia Urges Private Sector to Invest in EV Charging Station Infrastructure

The Cambodian government has encouraged the private sector to invest in building charging station infrastructure for electric vehicles (EV) in Cambodia.

Speaking at a panel discussion on “Electrification of Vehicles for a Green Future for Cambodia” on 4 November, HE Sun Chanthol, Minister of Public Works and Transport, said that the number of EVs will increase gradually in Cambodia in the coming years.

He stated that the increase is due to the fact that people are now more aware of the benefits of using EVs. Besides, the import tax on EVs is also less than half of the import of normal vehicles, thanks to the clean energy policy of Cambodia.

“Building charging stations should not be a responsibility of EDC. The private sector should work with us or should invest by themselves,” he said.

HE Sun Chanthol added that the ministry plans to talk with a number of investors on the possibility of installing EVs’ charging stations in main locations, along the expressway and National Road No. 5.

Currently, the number of registered EVs in Cambodia is still small compared to normal vehicles, which has reached almost one million.
