China Grants USD 20m on School Infrastructure & Education Improvement Project in Cambodia

In a significant step for Cambodia’s educational development, a USD 22.5 million project dedicated to improving school infrastructure and supplying educational materials was officially inaugurated at Hun Sen Peam Chi Kang High School in Kampong Cham province, under the presidency of PM Hun Manet on 26 October 2024

The ambitious project, primarily funded by the People’s Republic of China, aims to elevate the learning environment across 26 high schools and one teacher training center in Phnom Penh, Kandal, and Kampong Cham provinces.

Deputy PM and Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, HE Hang Chuon Naron, highlighted that “The People’s Republic of China contributed USD 20.4 million towards the project, with an additional USD 2.1 million from the Cambodian Government.”

“The project, implemented between 2018 and 2022 in response to the Cambodian Government’s request, addresses critical educational infrastructure needs,” said HE Hang Chuon Naron.

The deputy PM added that the improvements include constructing school buildings, resource facilities, guesthouses, and other essential infrastructure such as roads, fences, drainage systems, and sports facilities.

The project’s scope features 23 new school buildings equipped with 299 classrooms, furnished with furniture, electricity, and clean water supplies. It also encompasses 17 resource buildings with meeting rooms, 34 printers, and 34 desktop computers, as well as a collection of 51,646 books across 601 titles. Additionally, science laboratory equipment for physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science will be installed, supporting enhanced scientific education.

Key infrastructure additions include a dormitory building with 48 rooms and a guesthouse with 15 rooms accommodating 55 people, as well as the construction of 32 toilets (totaling 160 rooms) and 23 wells to improve water access.

Outdoor recreational facilities include 8 football tables and 15 basketball tables, complemented by a 640-metre concrete fence and a 750-metre concrete road to bolster security and accessibility.

Alongside these substantial infrastructure improvements, the project includes support for the Information and Communication Technology Development Project for Education, further enabling the advancement of Cambodia’s education sector. This partnership underscores China’s commitment to fostering development in Cambodia’s educational landscape.
