In a significant development that promises to reshape Cambodia’s energy landscape, China Datang Corporation Ltd. has committed to a staggering US$600 million increase in its existing investments in Cambodia’s energy sector.

This announcement emerged during a pivotal meeting at the “Third Belt and Road” forum held in Beijing on 16 October 2023. Samdech Hun Manet Prime Minister of Cambodia convened with Mr Zou Lei, Chairman of the Board of China Datang Corporation Ltd. Their discussions illuminated the remarkable potential for cooperation and growth within Cambodia’s burgeoning energy sector.

Mr Zhou Lei, Chairman of the Board, said that China Datang Corporation Ltd. is already actively engaged in Cambodia’s energy progress with two instrumental projects. The first endeavor encompasses a 120-megawatt hydropower project coupled with a transformative transmission line initiative.

The second feat extends to a 290-kilometre high-voltage substation, threading from Phnom Penh to Battambang. These projects underline China Datang’s commitment to harnessing Cambodia’s energy potential.

Mr Ley shared his unwavering confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Manet. This confidence is vividly manifested through a resolute pledge to bolster investments with an additional US$600 million infusion. These funds are earmarked to fortify Cambodia’s renewable energy arsenal, emphasizing solar and wind power. This generous commitment is poised to play an instrumental role in realizing the Cambodia government’s vision, encapsulated in the Pentagon Strategy of the seventh mandate.

Prime Minister Hun Manet reciprocated with ardent support and encouragement. He embraced China Datang’s comprehensive role in Cambodia’s energy endeavors, particularly highlighting technology transfer and renewable energy investments.
