China Dominant in Cambodia Property and Tourist Sector

A new report by Business Times shows that China is driving Cambodia’s property and tourism sector with massive investment expected to continue flowing into the country.

Entitled “China Drives Cambodia’s Booming Property Market And Tourism Sector”, the report highlights the rapidly increasing Chinese investment in Southeast Asia, especially in Cambodia as well as the high numbers of Chinese tourist arrivals in Cambodia.

According to the report, a Chinese company recently announced it will put in US$7 billion into new projects which include the construction of a highway connecting the capital city to the country’s only deep seaport city Sihanoukville.

In addition, this massive investment is also supported by more investment from Chinese firms including plans for the US$2.7 billion 133-story Twin Tower World Trade Center by Macau-based Sun Kian Ip Group.

The report also noted that in the first seven months of 2018, around 1.1 million Chinese tourists visited the country, an increase of 72.6% compared to the same period in 2017.

Yet more Chinese tourists are still expected to come to Cambodia. Citing the forecast by Cambodian Tourism Minister H.E Thong Khon, the report said that around 2.5 million Chinese visitors are planning to come to Cambodia by 2020.
