Agreements on the 400-megawatt power plant were signed on 11 June for building generator houses in Kandal province to produce power to supply to the capital Phnom Penh.

The signing ceremony was held in the presence of H.E. Keo Ratana, Director General of Electricite Du Cambodge (EDC), and the ambassadors of China, Germany, and Finland.

According to the agreements, two generator houses, running on diesel, will be built in Kandal province’s Lvea Em district. One will be powered by a 200MW generator from Finland and the plant will be built by China Gezhouba Group Corporation.

The second powerhouse will be powered by a 200MW generator from Germany and will be built by China National Heavy Machinery Corporation.

According to EDC, the project will cost US$380 million.

Power generated from the two-diesel run generator power houses will be available ten months after construction agreements were signed

H.E. Ty Norin, secretary of state at the Ministry of Mines and Energy, said that the upcoming new power projects and the 400MW power plants will contribute to increasing the power supply in the country as high demand for power has increased dramatically.

Projects on solar and a hydropower dam in Kampong Chhnang and Pursat provinces have been approved by the government, according to H.E. Ty Norin.

According to the ministry’s figures, Cambodia consumed 2,650 megawatts last year – about 15% higher than consumption in the year before – and of the 2018 power consumption, 442 megawatts were imported from Thailand, Vietnam and Laos.
