Construction materials import value up by 20% in first 8 months of 2021

During the first eight months of 2021, the import value of all goods to Cambodia (except gold) was recorded at US$14.6 billion, an increase of 26.7% compared to the same period last year, while the construction materials import value also jumped by 23.7% y-o-y.

According to a report from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the rise in the total import value was due to the increase in imports of textiles, raw materials for garment industrial, construction materials, fuel and other goods.

The report added that the Cambodian economy continued to be affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, especially the February 20 Community Incident, which lasted until now and put pressure on key indicators of economic growth.

Meanwhile, the construction sector is still in a downward trend, indicating by the decrease in approved projects and investment value.

During the first eight months, the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction has approved a total of 2,901 construction projects, a 449-project drop compared to the same period last year.

The total investment value of the aforementioned projects was US$3,843 million, also down by 24.4% year on year. (Read more)
