Construction professionals requested to properly implement construction law

The Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction has called for the full implementation of the construction law by professionals in the construction sector.

The call was made after the cases of collapsed buildings in Kep province and Preah Sihanouk and a pagoda building collapse in Siem Reap province.

Speaking at the dissemination workshop on the construction law held on 14 January, H.E. Chea Sophara, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction said that he asked the companies which received licenses from the ministry to properly follow the technical standards of construction to ensure the quality, safety, and beauty of construction buildings, and particularly to avoid any unexpected accidents.

“I open the workshop with a request for support from you all who are engineers and architects. Engineers help to make the buildings built with strength and confidence on the construction and architects can help to prepare the building plan which is also linked to Khmer architecture in the construction sector,” H.E. Chea Sophara said.

The ministry will continue to promote the construction law to ensure the proper implementation of the law, he said.

The construction law was approved and put into effect in November 2019 and will be fully effective six months after the law was approved by King.

Last week, the ministry also issued guidelines to strengthen the construction sector. The guidelines include the ban of any construction built without a permit or certificates issued by the ministry, construction workers’ staying in under-construction buildings. The ministry also urged officials to keep following up on inspections at construction sites to ensure the proper implementation of the construction law.
