Construction Starts on Three Provincial Courts of Appeal With Four in Pipeline

Plan for the Court of Appeal

Cambodia will construct seven new Courts of Appeal in designated provinces to increase convenience and reduce the expenditure of citizens, according to Ministry of Justice (MoJ) spokesman Chin Malin.

Speaking with the Khmer Times, Mr. Malin said that the government had already begun building three new additional Courts of Appeal in Battambang,Tbong Khmum and Sihanoukville provinces with four additional locations in the pipeline. However, details on location, construction dates, and budget of the four additional courts are yet to be disclosed.

In a phone interview with Construction & Property Magazine, spokesman of the Court of Appeal and Under Secretary of Administration Department Touch Tharith said that, the construction of the Tbong Khmum and Sihanoukville Province Courts of Appeal are 30% to 40% complete.

Currently, the country has only one Court of Appeal located in the capital of Phnom Penh and all of appeal cases in the country are filed there. Therefore, the three courts, which are expected to be finished within one year, will help reduce the expenditure of citizens because they will not have to travel all the way to the capital city.

The three provinces, Battambang, Tbong Khmum, and Sihanoukville were selected because of the high number of appeal cases filed from these provinces.
