Ground was broken on 3 July on water treatment plant in Kampot province which will contribute to the clean water supply in Kampot and Kep provinces.

The plant is a US$10 million investment by ANCO Water Supply, a subsidiary of ANCO BROTHERS Co Ltd, the conglomerate tasked with building and operating the facility.

Expected to commence operations in late 2019, the treatment plant is located in Teuk Chhou district, Kampot province, and will have a capacity of 20,000 cubic metres per day.

In Cambodia, the price of clean water is the cheapest compared to most other countries in the world, ranging from under 1,000 riel to no more than 3,000 riel per cubic metre. In some countres the price for potable water goes up to US$2 per cubic metre.

Currently, the state-owned water supply authority provides clean water in only 13 of 25 provinces.

The Ministry of Industry and Handicrafts’ spokesman Um Sotha said that the currently water supply licenses have been issued to 256 operators for private investment in provinces and rural areas.

Mr Um said that the ministry welcomed large investment projects in areas where the state-run water supply authority has not yet been able to penetrate.

“The fast growth of development has caused the high demand for water. There are many factors that cause water use to increase strongly, such as population growth, growth in infrastructure, and construction, and enterprise and factory buildings…,” Mr Um said.

According to the ministry, the demand for water is about 310 million cubic metres per day compared to 5 years ago when only 170 million cubic metres of water per day were needed.
