Emerging Green Journey: Cambodia’s Electric Vehicle Boom in 2024

In 2024, Cambodia experienced a remarkable increase in electric vehicle registrations, reaching a total of 2,253—a staggering 620% rise compared to 2023. This was confirmed by HE Phorn Rim, the spokesman for the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, on 15 January 2025.

This substantial growth indicates a positive shift towards green transportation in Cambodia. HE Phorn Rim stated, “In 2024 alone, there were a total of 2,253 registered electric vehicles, an increase of 620% compared to the same period in 2023, which saw only 313 units.” This significant figure reflects the growing consumer awareness and preference for sustainable vehicle options in Cambodia.

Currently, three electric vehicle manufacturers are leading the market: BYD from China, Toyota from Japan, and Tesla from the United States. These companies are making important contributions to the local market and reinforcing Cambodia’s commitment to a green future.

HE Peng Po Nea, the Minister of Public Works and Transport, emphasised that the rise in electric vehicle usage aligns with global trends in the electric vehicle sector. In response to this growth, efforts are being made to expand the necessary infrastructure. Cambodia currently boasts 21 charging stations nationwide, facilitating the increasing number of electric vehicles on the road. (Read more)

With this exciting trajectory, Cambodia is stepping confidently into the future of transportation and laying the groundwork for a cleaner, more sustainable environment.
